Responsibility for Selection
Responsibility for the selection of materials rests with the Head Librarian
acting in accordance with accepted professional practice, and the guidelines
outlined in this policy and approved by the Library Advisory Committee.
Selection may be delegated to members of the library staff who
are trained and experienced in the principles and practices of collection
development. The Children’s Librarian is primarily responsible
for determining the collection needs within the juvenile and young adult
areas of the collection and for ordering appropriate materials for those
areas. The Head Librarian gives final approval on all orders. Titles
and formats suggested by staff members and the general public are given
thoughtful consideration and titles are generally purchased if they are
consistent with the selection policy’s principles and can be accommodated
within the budget. A written review of the suggested work is generally
required by the Head Librarian in order to add a title to the collection.
